In an era in which the themes of cost constraint, market forces, and competitive efficiency dominate the health policy world, the newest edition of The Rights of Patients is almost giddily refreshing. To be sure, issues of health care cost and market efficiency are matters of great importance to health care consumers; one need only consider the plight of the more than 40 million uninsured Americans to understand the health threats created by unaffordable patient care.
