Health Officials Brace for Flu Season

Even before the arrival of the 2004-2005 influenza season, public health officials report that plans to vaccinate the US public have already encountered an unexpected glitch that raised concerns about whether delivery of some vaccine supplies will be delayed. A major manufacturer of this season’s vaccine, Chiron Corp (Emeryville, Calif), announced it was delaying release of its almost 50 million doses—half the vaccine supply—until scientists could determine the cause of contamination problems in some samples.
