Letters Section Editor: Robert M. Golub,
MD, Senior Editor.
To the Editor: In their cross-sectional study,
Dr Bates et al compare the number of authors whose contributions did not meet
authorship criteria in 3 general medical journals.1 They
state that the ICMJE “defines authorship as (1) substantial contribution
to the conception and design, or acquisition of data, or analysis of interpretation
of data; (2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important
intellectual content; and (3) final approval of the version to be published.”
Surprisingly, in their own article I could not find any mention of whether
all authors fulfilled the third criterion.
