In my office today,
I saw a girl
with lightless eyes.
I checked my books
to learn
what might go wrong
with cornea, iris, lens—
how the light
through a child’s eye
should filter and bend.
Not much came of this,
or calls to ophthalmologists.
I did discover
the girl was beaten
by her father and mother.
Did I not get
my optics right?
Or does the soul’s prism,
once kicked out of kilter,
no longer
refract the light?
