Historians have noted the growth in visibility of cancer over the past 150 years, by which they mean both the rising incidence and mortality associated with the disease in Western nations and the prominence of cancer in areas such as health care institutions, medical research, and media coverage. With his newly published Oncology: Tumors and Treatment—A Photographic History, physician and photograph collector Stanley B. Burns has contributed further to this visibility, giving us a window into the recent past of cancer history.
