In Toward a 21st Century Health System, Enthoven and Tollen have assembled a collection of well-written essays that describe the evolution of prepaid group practice (PGP) as a framework for organization and delivery that meets the needs of a contemporary health care system. Some of the 12 chapters and epilogue explain why PGPs were initially developed, describe their growth and popularity in the 1970s and 1980s, and distinguish between PGPs and their late 20th-century look-alikes, health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations, which were not built on a foundation of large multi-specialty medical groups.
