To the Editor: In discussing how medical education
must prepare students to meet the challenge of chronic disease management,
Dr Holman1 enumerates 7 areas in which students
should gain proficiency in order to adequately address chronic disease. This
list has 2 significant omissions: inspiring students to become advocates for
underserved patients and teaching students how to be culturally competent.
