Preventing Intellectual Disability, by Pekka Louhiala, Finnish pediatrician and philosopher, is an important contribution to a sparse literature. Commencing with four paradigmatic cases that raise ethical issues concerning the prevention of intellectual disability, the work, based on Louhiala’s doctoral dissertation, is expansive in scope while aiming at practical relevance and theoretical rigor. This broad reach is the source of both the book’s strengths and its weaknesses.
