Trial Registration: Ignored to Irresistible—Reply

JAMA. 2005;293(2):158. doi:10.1001/jama.293.2.158-c

In Reply: I am glad that GSK has confirmed that it is moving to produce a worthwhile register of trials, albeit as part of a settlement of the lawsuit brought by Eliot Spitzer, attorney general for the State of New York, discussed in my Commentary.1 The updated code of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America still does not endorse trial registers. As I also noted, the voluntary register set up in the United Kingdom by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry has not been effective and, in the United States, commercial sponsors of trials have shown themselves willing to ignore a law that requires registration.2
