About two years ago I reviewed the late Roy Porter’s Bodies Politic: Disease, Death and Doctors in Britain, 1650-1900. I
innocently believed it was Porter’s last book. If any more appear, I
will begin to think this prolific, brilliant historian of the Enlightenment
and medicine has achieved the ability to communicate from beyond. A silly
thought, but some of the authors Porter surveys in Flesh
in the Age of Reason: The Modern Foundations of Body
and Soul seriously discussed such things.
