Several years ago, the editors of JAMA asked me to review Dr Howard M. Spiro’s book The Power of Hope: A Doctor’s Perspective. I was delighted to do so—the title was intriguing, and the author had a sterling reputation as a clinician, teacher, and writer.

I was not disappointed. The book turned out to be a little gem, easy to read, yet packed with insights and pronouncements on the practice of medicine. Spiro’s observations and opinions were informative and often inspirational.
