Why another textbook on HIV infection and related disease? Whom would it interest in a time of daily Web-based updates on HIV disease and its management? What might one expect from the new fourth edition of a comprehensive, classic textbook, edited by a world-renowned scientist and leader in the field?

The answers are easy after even a brief look at the textbook’s comprehensive structure, expanded contents, and consistent updating. Vast data from the literature and clinical experience have been carefully assessed and filtered by the editor and contributors, reflecting generous, hard effort for the great benefit of all users. Each year, there are more than 200 000 citations from indexed scientific journals on HIV infection and related conditions. Such a formidable challenge has been more than met by Wormser and his highly qualified collaborators.
