New TB Strategy

JAMA. 2005;293(11):1316. doi:10.1001/jama.293.11.1316-c

Current drug treatment for tuberculosis (TB) does not eliminate Mycobacterium tuberculosis from the body, which means that the infection can reactivate in the future. Now, findings from Korean investigators, published February 3 in an online edition of Gene Therapy (http://www.nature.com/gt /index.html), suggest that combining standard TB drug therapy with a vaccine containing M tuberculosis DNA might offer a way to clear the body of the infection relatively quickly and guard against repeat infection.
