George Bakris, MD

JAMA. 2005;293(12):1439. doi:10.1001/jama.293.12.1439

With hypertension expected to affect fully one third of the world’s population by 2015, improving control of this major cause of cardiovascular disease is paramount.

George Bakris, MD, is one of the leaders in the battle over hypertension. A professor of preventive medicine and internal medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Bakris is also a member of the executive committee of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC), which issued its seventh report in July 2003 (Chobanian et al. JAMA. 2003;289:2560-2572). JNC 7 stands as the current evidence-based guideline for physicians treating hypertension.
