Although the roster of high-quality books on the US Civil War continues to grow, they do not sufficiently address the impact of diseases and medical care, or the lack thereof, on the war’s outcome. Interested readers have had to rely on the older works Doctors in Blue and Doctors in Gray for an overview of these vital issues. Recent works have shed new light on the contributions of individual physicians during the Civil War, but there has not been an in-depth study of how medicine and pharmacy played key roles in the Union’s final victory. Michael Flannery’s new book, though somewhat misnamed, finally fills this major void.
