Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery by Cummings et al is the fourth edition of a comprehensive compendium of information pertaining to this specialty. The opportunity to review this vast, four-volume set has special interest for me. I purchased the first edition as a general surgical resident in 1983. I was (and still am) enraptured by the material of this wonderful specialty and somehow managed to read all the volumes from cover to cover before my first day as an otolaryngology resident. The foundation of knowledge I acquired from the first edition propelled me through my residency. Now, 22 years later, having published articles and served as a journal reviewer and embarking on the experience of editing my first book, I am asked to review this staple of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery. I have read all four editions and find my assignment not unlike reviewing someone who raised me.
