In an effort to curb selective abortion of female fetuses, Chinese lawmakers
are considering passing legislation that would impose harsher punishments
on physicians who determine or reveal the sex of a fetus or conduct abortions
for nonmedical purposes, according to reports in the Chinese media (www.chinadaily.net/english/home/index.html). Currently, physicians face only fines and administrative
penalties for the practice.
