Everyone accepts the data: hospitalists lower costs and reduce length
of stay without affecting patient outcomes or satisfaction. Administrators
endorse the system because of increased efficiency and productivity. Many
physicians in practice have embraced the idea, as it frees them up from inefficient
hospital rounds. Most teaching hospitals use hospitalists to train their residents
and students. Admittedly, at some level the hospitalist system makes my life
easier. It is less hectic when I can concentrate on seeing my outpatients
without getting interrupting pages from residents or consultants caring for
my inpatients. This makes me more efficient and productive as well.
