When comparing this new volume edited by Cole et al with its 1994 predecessor, Tuberculosis, edited by Bloom, one is struck by the sheer volume of new information produced in the last decade. Tremendous advances in genomics, mycobacterial genetics, and immunology make the new edition feel long overdue.

Like its predecessor, the scope of the volume is broad. The first of its three sections covers clinical, epidemiological, and diagnostic aspects of tuberculosis, including chapters on the global burden of tuberculosis, molecular and immunological advances in diagnostics, and the scope and mechanisms of drug resistance. The second section turns to the biology of the tubercle bacillus and features chapters heavily influenced by the recently elucidated genome sequence. Topics include genomics, genetics, metabolism, cell wall structure and function, signal transduction, and transport systems. The final section reviews the host response to mycobacterial infection and surveys macrophage, dendritic cell, and lymphocyte responses, cytokines, antibody responses, and animal models of infection. This is a highly scientific text, geared primarily to tuberculosis researchers, although clinicians with a particular interest in tuberculosis pathogenesis may also find it worthwhile.
