In a snowy blur
north of Knoxville,
a white cross
spells Jason on its spar.
Near Athens on a rail,
two ribboned hearts.
White letters spell Sheila;
Mud stains the e in Sue.
Winter is the culling time,
the elders say,
when the weary
head home.
Three gold crosses
near Cartersville,
no names, cold plastic
flowers on a hill.
