The first edition of this book was published in 1996 as Atherosclerosis and Coronary Artery Disease. The change in the title
from Atherosclerosis to Atherothrombosis reflects enhanced understanding of the disease process.
The second, single-volume edition has 105 chapters by more than 200
authors of worldwide repute. Although the book has been shortened, it has
10 new chapters, which discuss the latest developments in understanding the
genetics of atherothrombosis, plaque morphology, and newer imaging modalities.
Other notable and useful chapters cover the surgical and nonsurgical management
of carotid artery disease and the role of behavioral modification and alternative
medicine. The second edition is a major revision in accordance with the tremendous
increase in knowledge of the molecular basis of atherothrombosis and its clinical
management, based on multiple large-scale clinical trials.
