Legislation giving the FDA full regulatory authority over cosmetic contact
lenses is moving forward.
On July 29, the Senate passed S 172, amending the Federal Food, Drug,
and Cosmetic Act “to provide for the regulation of all contact lenses
as medical devices, and for other purposes” (http://thomas.loc.gov). On September 6, the bill moved to the House, where similar legislation
(HR 371) has already been introduced.
