For the first time in the history of humanity, we are a majority urban population, with more people living in cities than in rural areas. Given this dramatic population shift, the recently published Handbook of Urban Health, edited by Sandro Galea and David Vlahov, is a timely reference for those concerned about the health of urban populations. Both editors are at the Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies at the New York Academy of Medicine and the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.
