Regular exercise during midlife may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer disease or other dementia later in life, according to a new study by researchers from Sweden and Finland (Rovio et al. Lancet Neurol. 2005;4:705-711).
The investigators randomly selected 2000 individuals aged 65 to 79 years who had previously been surveyed once at midlife (at a mean age of 50.6 years) about their leisure-time physical activity as part of a study of cardiovascular risk factors; 1449 agreed to a reexamination (at a mean age of 71.6 years).
