Sapira’s Art and Science of Bedside Diagnosis, third edition, aims to help the reader “achieve the correct personal, metaphysical, and epistemologic perspectives on the artful science of clinical examination.” It intentionally advocates learning from and perpetuating the “tradition of clinical examination” and views skeptically the “revolution in academic medicine” of the past 30 years, wherein “the intellectual approach to diagnosis” and techniques of clinical examination have fallen into disfavor and been superseded by an “inappropriately exclusive reliance on dogma and modern technologic devices” (preface, p xv).
