Haunted houses are not restricted to a once-a-year appearance on All Hallows’ Eve; they—and the ghosts that inhabit them—are all around us, all the time. The houses are vessels of the spirit. Their silent, empty rooms speak volumes; the biographies of all who have ever lived in them or even visited them are encoded in their dust. If you are attentive, you will hear the sighs of the old, the whispers of lovers, the laughter of children; perhaps you will even smell the aroma of simmering soup, slow-roasting fowl, freshly baked bread.
