President Bush on November 1 unveiled a $7.1-billion emergency appropriation request for pandemic flu preparations as the H5N1 avian influenza virus continues to spread, raising fears of a potential global human health disaster.
The requested funds would be used to improve disease surveillance, stockpile antiviral medications and vaccines, and increase preparedness among state and local governments. The report is available online at: http://www.hhs.gov/pandemicflu/plan/pdf/HHSPandemicInfluenzaPlan.pdf.
