Global HIV/AIDS Report

JAMA. 2005;294(23):2961. doi:10.1001/jama.294.23.2961-b

HIV/AIDS infection continues to expand globally, with more than 40 million people now estimated to be living with the infection, according to a report from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains hardest hit, with infection rates as high as 30% in pregnant women from some countries. Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia are seeing growing epidemics, fueled by injection drug use and commercial sex. The report also noted “alarming signs” that other countries, including Pakistan and Indonesia, could be on the brink of serious epidemics.
