Alas, the lessons of medicine, including those of pathology, do not follow Carroll's intriguing plan. On the contrary, each successive edition of every pathology textbook becomes more voluminous. The fourth edition of Silverberg, appearing 9 years after the third, is no exception and is more massive than ever: the two volumes together weigh nearly 20 lb.
