Surgical and Medical Treatment in Art, by Alan and Marcia Emery, is a successful sequel to their Medicine and Art, published in 2002. In this volume, 66 plates show developments in medical treatment from ancient times to the present. Major emphasis is on surgical treatments, with some medical therapies shown as well. Both satiric and serious depictions of physicians and their practice are included. Artists with an interest in medicine and physicians who are also artists are represented. Accompanying each plate is a concise discussion of the art work and the artist's relationship to medicine and, often, brief historical consideration of the medical subject.
