Reading the ninth edition of Kaplan's Clinical Hypertension, I was impressed by how many of the cited references have been published since the previous, 2002 edition. Dr Kaplan writes in the new preface that “a considerable amount of significant new information is included in this edition” and that “almost every page has been revised.” Comparing a sampling of chapters in the eighth and ninth editions (chapters 2, 7, 13, and 15), I found that, although the number of references in these chapters was about the same (1408 in the eighth edition, 1391 in the ninth edition), fully 46% of those in the ninth edition are from 2002 or later and thus are new since the eighth edition.
