This well-organized, well-integrated work examines in detail the literature of suicide and its prevention, the author's clinical experiences, and his personal encounter with suicide, that of his father. Joiner, Bright-Burton Professor of Psychology at Florida State University, has mined the voluminous field of suicide study to produce an excellent summary of its current status, with more than 300 references (including 15 to his original research). From this vantage he offers a theory of the genesis of suicidal behavior and strategies of clinical prevention. In one summation he writes:
