In Reply: Dr Magee correctly points out that kidney transplant candidates may be temporarily made inactive. These intervals of transplant ineligibility are integral parts of the medical situation that our study examined. Temporary inactivity on the waiting list is a consequence, rather than a cause, of a change in a patient's condition. It is often transient and certainly is not invariably proximate to death. The change may be for the worse or for the better. Our goal was to determine the ultimate fate for each patient, starting at placement on the waiting list, distinguished only by whether or not they received an ECD kidney.
