As children, my brother and sister and I were lucky enough to have our own swimming pool, and our ear infections were as numerous as the mosquitoes buzzing in the Texas summer evenings. Carefully tended by my dad, the pool sparkled blue coolness in the humid heat; we would jump in, clothes and all, just to feel the instant delight of refreshing water against our hot and sweaty bodies. Naturally, my parents tried to prevent the inevitable bouts of otitis, but we fought vigorously against the assaults of Swim Ear drops, hating the pungent alcoholic shivers in our tender ears. And so another round of summer doctor's visits would begin.
