The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued an interim final rule to provide continued Medicare financing of medical residents training in programs affected by natural disasters or public health emergencies. Residents from affected hospitals will receive Medicare support while they train at temporary host hospitals anywhere in the country and regain their residency funding when they return to their training programs.
The rule will apply retroactively to hospitals in areas affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita that temporarily closed parts of their residency programs and the host hospitals that accepted displaced residents.
