“The heart is a basic organ that helps, by its steady beating, to define our humanity from within” (p 192). So writes Albert Howard Carter III, PhD, in this compendium about the human heart, a journey through books and into hospitals, interspersed with conversations under the Montana stars. The goal is to present the medical and cultural aspects of this central organ. Professor Carter's work is volume 8 in the Literature and Medicine Series, edited by Martin Kohn and Carol Donley and published by Kent State University Press. The volume was inspired by the author's 1998 Distinguished Visiting Professorship in a joint program of St Patrick Hospital and the University of Montana, Missoula.
