The third time is a charm.—Portuguese proverb

It is a pleasure to see a noted textbook evolve in line with the discipline that it covers. In the third edition of Pediatric Critical Care, Fuhrman and Zimmerman have raised the bar to a new high standard.

The text has a new look and important changes. The 119 chapters cover just about the full range of problems and challenges that may arise in the pediatric intensive care unit. Each chapter is preceded by a list of “pearls.” However, unlike those quoted to house officers by chief residents or attending physicians, intended to be memorized for future use, these offer a conceptual roadmap of the chapter that follows. Another change is that boxes and tables are shaded, making them easier to read and better adapted for quick referral.
