The papers of Virginia Apgar, MD (1909-1974), creator of the Apgar score to evaluate newborns, have been added to the National Library of Medicine's Profiles in Science Web site (http://www.profiles.nlm.nih.gov).
An anesthesiologist determined to ensure that newborns in distress received prompt attention, Apgar developed a simple and rapid method for assessing the medical condition of newborn babies. Her method, which checks the same signs anesthesiologists monitor during and after surgery, reduced infant mortality and put neonatology on a firm scientific basis.
