Book and Media Reviews Section Editor: Harriet S. Meyer, MD, Contributing Editor, JAMA.

JAMA. 2006;296(10):1294-1299. doi:10.1001/jama.296.10.1294-b

The first edition of Medicine in Quotations was the result of an open invitation to readers of Annals of Internal Medicine to share their favorite snippets of medical writing. This second edition, with its 3521 quotations, has been expanded by 15% with additional quotations from readers of the first edition. In a democratic spirit, the editors have allowed the resulting collection to define its own goals and priorities. There are many recent quotations, for instance, from modern scientific journals. There are also excerpts from classic medical treatises, as well as from a wide range of authors, philosophers, and scientists from antiquity to the present. Having received this protean material, the editors then assembled a kind of sampler of styles, periods, and priorities of the kinds of prose that physicians apparently find especially quotable.
