Stephen Ryan has done it again. The fourth edition of this three-volume textbook is again a superb, comprehensive presentation and detailed compendium of current knowledge of the vitreous and retina. One might think it impossible to write more than 2600 pages on such a small structure, but the complexity of the retina and its vital role in the physiology of sight warrant this amount of material. Furthermore, knowledge of the retina, its diseases, and medical and surgical treatments has grown since the third edition was published in 2001.
