Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), it would seem, never met a style of painting he didn't invent or, if not invent, cobble together from styles already invented by others. Nor would it seem possible to add anything new to the vast literature on Picasso that followed (as well as preceded) his death nearly 35 years ago. To the casual observer his name is probably most often equated with Cubism, as though the style were his and his alone. Recent scholarship suggests that his contemporary—and close friend—Georges Braque had as much, if not more, to do with the invention of Cubism as had Picasso. Always the innovator, however, Picasso soon coupled collage with Cubism, and the early 20th century had yet another modern style to grapple with.
