Topol's Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine appears in its third edition 5 years after the second. This is a large comprehensive work, with 198 authors, 1628 pages, 89 chapters, and an estimated 16 000 references. It is accompanied by a DVD that includes the entire text, illustrations, and references, plus 21 additional chapters that are not in the printed book. The infrastructure remains much the same, but a number of new chapters have been added, covering clinical topics such as prevention of heart failure, cardiac resynchronization, perioperative management, percutaneous heart valve repair, and several topics in basic science.
