At a time when federal funding for science in the United States has generally declined, European researchers have something to cheer about: the recent launch of the European Research Council (ERC). The new research funding agency, 5 years in the making and modeled on major US agencies such as the National Science Foundation, will focus solely on supporting fundamental ”blue-skies” research and grant proposals according to their excellence and quality.
“This is a revolutionary development,” says ERC President Fotis Kafatos, PhD, of Imperial College London, England. “We are committed to establish the ERC as an outstanding research funding agency that attracts the very best researchers.”
