Expunging Variola is an informative addition to the literature on India's arduous struggle to eradicate smallpox. It builds on the earlier Fractured States: Smallpox, Public Health and Vaccination Policy in British India 1800-1947, coauthored by the same writer, which describes India's efforts against smallpox up to the country's political independence in 1947. This book covers the 30 years from 1947 through the certification by the World Health Organization (WHO) of India's miraculous achievement in April 1977.
