Veterans and Suicide

JAMA. 2007;297(24):2686. doi:10.1001/jama.297.24.2686-c

While the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is moving in the right direction for improving mental health and preventing suicide among veterans, the agency could be doing more, said a report released on May 10 (http://www.va.gov/oig/54/reports/VAOIG-06-03706-126.pdf).

The VA mental health officials estimate that 1000 suicides occur per year among the 5 million veterans receiving care within the agency; as many as 5000 suicides occur among all 25 million veterans.
