A bill authorizing $99.6 million to promote health care information technology (IT) research that could lead to 10 000 new jobs in the field passed by a voice vote June 6 in the House.
The bill (HR 1467 [http://thomas.loc.gov]) calls for authorizing the National Science Foundation to award grants through fiscal year 2011. The grants consist of $37.2 million to universities to expand and improve health care IT training programs, $29.2 million to junior colleges to establish or expand associate degree programs in health care IT, $18.6 million to universities to create centers for IT research, and $14.6 million for basic health care IT research.
