It had been a frustrating morning looking for physicians in a town in southern Iraq. I had already been to three hospitals searching for attending physicians willing to talk to me about human rights abuses under the just-deposed Saddam Hussein regime, and I had found that on Friday, the Muslim Sabbath, the hospitals were staffed only by disgruntled residents. I planned to quickly drop off copies of our survey at the last hospital and return to the hotel for lunch and a rest during the 110°F midday heat.
