If nerves are the highway
pain is the center line,
intermittent blips of spasm
on the familiar commute.
Beneath the skin,
feel the tributaries to femur
flare and tingle,
tangible as macadam—
interstate south to metatarsus,
18 wheeler blaring on the long
haul to Tallahassee, summer,
the pavement shimmering.
