Violations Probed at NIEHS, NTP

JAMA. 2007;298(12):1389. doi:10.1001/jama.298.12.1389-d

In the wake of congressional investigations of ethics violations, conflicts of interest, and mismanagement at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Toxicology Program (NTP), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is launching a comprehensive review of management and leadership at the agencies.

NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni, MD, announced in August that a panel of management consultants and senior NIH officials who are not affiliated with the NIEHS or the NTP will conduct the review. The panel will investigate the allegations and evaluate a broad range of the agencies' administrative functions, including human resources, contracts, financial management, and administration of the ethics program.
