“Give Lori a kiss for me.” That was how my grandfather ended all of our telephone conversations, with a gentle but straightforward reminder of what my top priority should always be: to love my wife.
Of course, Papa didn't need words to impart his most cherished value. Through 60 years of marriage, he taught convincingly by example.
I can remember, on countless occasions, my grandparents having a minor spat around the kitchen table. Suddenly, just as the argument was about to reach a crescendo, Papa would switch gears, smile mischievously, and turn to me. “You see your grandmother?” he’d announce. “Now that is a beautiful woman.”
